Recently, Onsemi (NASDAQ listing code: ON), which promotes energy efficiency innovation, launched two new LED lighting controller solutions. The dimmable NCL30386 and non dimmable NCL30388 provide leading market choices for LED lighting equipment designers, such as lighting fixtures in offices and industrial buildings. These two devices are high power factor (PF), single section, constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) primary regulation (PSR) pulse width modulation (PWM) controllers for flyback, buck boost or Single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) power supply topologies. They work in the quasi resonant (QR) mode, and their energy efficiency level exceeds the energy consumption standards of Ecodessign in the European Union, Energy Star in the United States, and NEMA SSL.

The integrated digital power factor correction (PFC) algorithm ensures a market leading PF of greater than 0.95 and less than 10% of Total harmonic distortion (THD) within the common input voltage range. The integrated high-voltage starting current source ensures fast starting speed, low standby energy consumption, and wide range output operation. The current and voltage are controlled and adjusted through a digital PSR CC/CV circuit, typically within a range of ± 2%, providing extremely uniform lighting brightness under all conditions.

These devices are simple to use and can operate in a wide voltage range (VCC) of 9.2-26 VDC. They have valley locking and frequency reversal functions, ensuring high energy efficiency throughout the entire voltage range. By incorporating safety features such as undervoltage and overvoltage protection, as well as detecting short circuits in outputs, windings, and diodes, the design of LED lighting applications is further simplified.

Both NCL30386 and NCL30388 do not require many external components to complete the design, reducing product launch time, bill of materials (BoM) costs, and reducing the space required to achieve a complete lighting solution.

In addition, NCL30386 also provides excellent dimming function, including linear or quadratic dimming curve options. The wide analog dimming range is controlled by two dedicated analog/PWM control pins, enabling precise dimming with a minimum dimming ratio of 0.5% and no audible noise.
